German Flecktarn Army Parka Review

Way back in the 80's possibly as some people say due to the Rambo films there was a great interest in buying army surplus kit.

I personally think that this interest was simply there because survival and survival training was seen as military activity and something that was not then in the civy domain.

I suppose that by wearing ex-army gear the person felt more at one with the environment and of course blended in by way of the camouflage at least.

It is true to say that it was the Rambo films with his hollow handled survival knife that began the UK love affair with survival.

Now although his hollow handle knife was and in my opinion is a waste of hard earned money the idea of living on ones wits and using learned survival skills was born.

Ex army surplus clothing has been used by fishermen, builders, and of course survivalists as it is reasonably priced, it does what it says on the tin and there is a choice of styles and camouflage options.

Recently I was sent the German Flecktarn Army Parka from British Army Surplus, who have been providing a quality service since 1947

I attended the CUP Bug-Out weekend and wore the parka there.

Firstly I really like flecktarn as a camo and secondly as a waterproof parka it was just what I wanted.

The parka has the usual chest pocket with flaps and two side pockets with zips. a pen pocket on the left upper arm and Velcro closers on the wrists and attached hood.

This weekend had a few heavy rain incidents in fact at one point thunder and lightening, it was ideal to test this parka. Well it was fantastic, totally waterproof and with the integral hood now trickle down my neck either.

Firstly the quality of the parka was Unquestionable, it in fact looked new and that would have been that except for the cigarette butts in the pockets along with some lose tobacco as well.

But, so what, I knew it was not new, but army surplus, the question was if second hand what could I expect from it.

The stitching was in good order with no lose threads the zips and the fasteners worked perfectly, it even fitted me, now that is a bonus.

It certainly is a wind cheater and very comfortable to wear. I would recommend however that wearing something underneath would be advisable in colder conditions, but on this occasion I was warm and more importantly dry.

So what more can I ask from a waterproof parka but to be waterproof and it is. Added to this is the quality of the product its practicability and in my opinion it good looks.

But best of all is its price only £14.95 beat that then.

The Camp Fire Cooking Grill Review

Besides the smell, warmth and the general good feeling of a campfire, it can also be fun to cook a big meal over a living, crackling flame. One of the easiest and best ways to do that is with a campfire-specific grill.

Cooking over an open fire is for me what being in the great outdoors is all about, and this usually means some kind of stew, or animal over the flames or coals with varying levels of heat reaching what is being cooked.

However for anyone bugging-out in a BOV it is perfect in every way.

I have cooked everything from cheeseburgers, steaks, kebabs, stews, eggs in oranges, baked spuds in foil, and kept a pot of water on the go for a cuppa when ever I wanted one.

So why is this grill better than the others, well in my opinion it is because of the built in design features.

For example you can adjust the grills height while it is over the fire safely, and if you need to turn the food or remove it or put more on the grill, you simply swing the grill to the side and when finished swing it back over the fire again very safely indeed.

So a grill that in effect allows you to adjust the heat, now thats not only a novelty but a great design feature I think you will agree.

This is a "warrantles" attack. it is snooping, it is an invasion of privicy and I am not happy about it, the question is are you?

In the old days the police and security serviced required a judge signed warrant to tap your communications, this system simply by-passes that need.

The old saying "if you have nothing to hide what is the problem" is in fact to me the problem, my private communications should be just that private.

I mean would you go into a public place and let anyone scroll through your phone contacts, or put a private conversation on speaker in a crowded area, of course not, because that is all private information.

The Flipside Wallet 3X Review

It's been known for some time that there are security issues associated with the use of RFID in credit cards, and recently there was a demonstration of just how easy it is for hackers to take advantage of them.

At a hacker conference in Washington, D.C., Recursion Ventures security researcher Kristin Paget used about $350 in equipment to wirelessly read a volunteer’s RFID-enabled credit card and then encode its key data onto a blank card.

Next, she used the fraudulent card and a square card Reader to make a payment to herself.

'Embarrassingly Simple'

Elaborate trick? NO, not at all “This is an embarrassingly simple hack, but it works,” she said.

Essentially, it's possible because like the way the store's point-of-sale device reads the data on a contactless card wirelessly, so, too, can pretty much any RFID reader--through standard wallets and clothing, and regardless of the encryption or security measures that are in place, Paget said.

Today's contactless cards don't make the user’s name, PIN, or permanent three-digit CVV code wirelessly available, the report notes; they also use a one-time CVV code with each scan so as to prevent repeated fraudulent use.

I am sure that you will agree that this demonstration shows how easy it would be for one or more hackers to scan numerous victims' cards, even just to use each of them once.

So what can you do to protect yourself from an RFID attack

OK well there are a few steps you can take to protect your cards. Among the more drastic options, certainly, is toasting your RFID chip in the microwave--three seconds on high will kill it. Of course, then you can kiss your contactless payment capabilities goodbye as well.

There are even instructions on the Web for how to give your existing wallet RFID-inhibiting protection using just duct tape and aluminium foil.

The Pits & Bits Review

Whether you are on a practice bug-out, wild camping, fishing, hunting or to be honest simply away from a water source the waterless Pits and Bits Body Wash will keep you clean when away from any shower facilities.

Well that is what the company says, but what do I say?

I was sent two meals and each pack says they provide 5 servings, well to be honest if you combine them with other food say meat or fish and veg they will do exactly that very easily indeed.

But if you are on your lonesome and starving then it is common sense to eat the whole pack yourself.

To cook these meal simply measure out five cups of water tip the contents in, stir and boil for 15 to 20 minutes done.

The two I tried were the Irish Pub Cheddar Potato Soup and the Mango Habanero Chili

The Irish Pub Cheddar Potato Soup is one of those delicious meals that warms you from the inside out. It is one of the best soups around.

I really liked this one and did have it all myself, round the camp fire you could try adding hot dog sausages or any tinned meats for example and that would certainly bulk it out and reduce the amount of cooking required to fill you up.

The Mango Habanero Chili is some of the most flavourful and hottest tasting chili around. Sure to warm you up in any situation.

Now with this one I was a bit dubious as I am not a lover of hot chilies, but again I was happily surprised and ate the lot, well I did let Julie have some and even she enjoyed it and that is a complement indeed.

Valley Food Storage have a sure fire hit with these very tasty meals they are filling easy to store and light enough so you want to pack them for your wilderness adventures.

It is also great to see a meal that has five servings in it, as this allows you to carry a selection of their meals for your party and spread them throughout your back packs.

So what do I think?

This is a superbly designed and very well made self-defence tool. OK, it is illegal here in the UK but it is not in the USA and in I would imagine many other countries as well.

I fail to see why we as law abiding British citizens are denied the right to be able to defend ourselves against society’s low life. Surely it is a human right to be able to defend ourselves, as to do otherwise are we not simply bending to violence and threat? And in real terms standing on a high ledge just waiting to be pushed off?

The Sharp Shooter can of course be used offensively, but so can a rolled up newspaper, kitchen knives, and bricks and of course the oldest weapon of them all the human body.

I would rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6. Therefore I am as a responsible adult simply preparing for the what if, event by carrying the sharp shooter.

After all it is just a very well made key ring with some paracord attached to it. If it is totally legal to carry a bunch of keys on a chain as truckers and bikers do then how can it be illegal to carry this sharp shooter key ring?

I now have a Key Smart in which my keys are held, not unlike a Swiss Army knife, this makes the keys totally silent by the way and stops them from catching on clothing and or wearing holes in my pockets.

I cannot advise you to carry the sharp shooter, I can only bring it to your attention and leave it to you the responsible preppers and survivalists that I know you to be.

I have found the KeySmart to be a great solution to the ugly noisy bunch of keys normally found hanging from a key ring, it is also now not a painful problem when carrying keys in my trouser pocket as there are no sharp points to dig into my leg.

StrikeFire Fire Starter and Sporks Review

A variation of the old flint and steel concept, ferrocerium rods produce larger, hotter, and more sparks than their predecessor.

First, why not just use matches or lighters? They're easier to use and cheaper, right? Well, I do recommend keeping a few lighters and matches on hand, but no, they aren't always easier to use, and they aren't cheaper either.

Consider lighting a fire after falling into water, or after your lighter or matches have been in the rain.

Wet lighters and matches don't work, while ferrocerium rod fire starters like the StrikeFire are impervious to water, and will easily start fires while wet. You can buy waterproof matches and lighters but they will cost a lot more overall.

Be aware that while waterproof matches may be waterproof, the rough surface they come with to strike on often isn't.

Before we can compare the cost between a StrikeFire and matches/lighters, we have to know how long a StrikeFire lasts. We get roughly 12000 fires form the large strikefire before it needs to be replaced.

There is a medium version that lights 3,000 fires.

They both produce temperatures of 3,000 degrees Celsius, the sparks from a StrikeFire will light a huge range of natural and man-made tinders, including gas and petrol camping stoves.

The scraper roughly ½” x2” can be used in many different ways, you can have it engraved, you could have an edge put on it, paint it, polish it etc. In an emergency it can be used as a reflective signal device. 

To start a fire all you have to do is unpick the jute which runs along the top or outside of the BSB select the length you want and then tease the strands apart and rub them between the palms of your hands to further rough them up form a nest and then introduce a spark.

The ferrocerium rod which also acts as a toggle closure for the BSB is captive on the bracelet so you will not lose it when using it.

As with all fire making you must gather enough dry tinder and fuel before you attempt to light the jute. I have found once the nest is alight (which is an instant ignition by the way) I use Birch bark to increase the heat and then the smaller twigs and build up from there.

Now the best bit about the BSB is starting fires does not damage the BSB at all, as you simply re place the used jute by threading it back through the original loops simply and effective.

The BSB is a real asset and a must for the serious prepper and survivalist as even if you run out of jute the BSB will continue lighting fires for you anyway.

What I say

Firstly let me say that I am totally impressed in every way with the Survival Slingshot, it is very clear to see that a great deal of thought went into its design and make up.

For example, you can simply turn your survival slingshot into one that fires arrows by attaching a whisper biscuit.

You can also mount a tactical LED torch so you can hunt in low light or even in the dark. As you know, many game animals are nocturnal so hunting at night can be very productive.

With the light attachment, you can now find your quarry, feather, fur or fish at dusk, early dawn and late into the night.

Simply a silent food provider.

I would say that small game and fish are what will keep you alive when you need to hunt for food. Having set many traps and snares in the past I can tell you that although it may seem easy to snare and trap game, in truth it takes an awful lot of practice and is a somewhat hit and miss method of feeding yourself.

Place a bolt in the appropriate groove. If the bolt is placed correctly, one of the fletchings should be resting in the grove and the end of the bolt should be against the string

Before lifting the bow, ensure that both the automatic and manual safety are on

Step 2: Firing the Crossbow

Once you are ready to fire your crossbow, get ready to aim. Keep in mind that most crossbows are designed to fire at targets that are 20, and at the most, 40 yards away. Dry-firing your crossbow can damage it, so always make sure a bolt is fitted properly in the groove before planning to fire.

After a year of running a notebook through its paces I was impressed however a simple 30 second test you can do yourself will impress you more.

I took one Rite in Rain notebook paper and one sheet of ordinary note pad paper. I put them both into a bath of warm water but in around 30 seconds the ordinary paper was really a mush when I tried to pick it up, while the RITR paper was totally unaffected and without even drying it I was able to write on it, I placed it back into the warm water for a minute and the writing was perfectly readable and un-smudged.

That is marvellous I hear you say, but how often do we have a warm bath in the woods, well that is very true, so I took the RITN notebook and placed it in a local stream that was of course cold water and after a minute I removed it and again wrote on the paper and once again put it back into the cold water for another minute, the result was of course totally readable and un-smudged as well.

This RITR paper is really amazing and really does work even having been submerged, which meant that any previous notes will not be destroyed if it falls into the water and even if it does the product is not affected in any way and is useable just like new.

OK it was not mean to be submerged just be able to RITR so I got my lad to direct the garden hose at me on sprinkler, i.e. rain and as I knew all was well and I was able to write without any problem at all.

Having waterproof paper is one thing but how do you write on it?

Well what you need is a tactical All-Weather Pen, it writes at any angle, upside down and even under water as well.

The ink is permanent and in face was the pen used on all manned space flights, so you just know it will work well.

And it is perfect for use on RITR notepads and paper.

It also offers itself up as a tactical pen as its construction will withstand a high impact strike, I know this because I was jabbing it into wooden pallets without any problem at all. Refills are very easy to get for this pen and together they rock, so if you are fishing, hunting, prepping or surviving the RITR paper and the all-weather pen are an absolute must for your BoB and prepping kit.

This is the CB radio for the beginner, is has AM and FM and an 8watt output. It is very simple to set up and use and will provide you with post SHTF communications for free.

Ok the usual transmission distance is between 5 and say 20 miles but today on the A61 between Harrogate and Ripon I was talking to Joshua 0171 in Valentia Spain. As the saying goes the skip was right at the time.

CB radios are free to use and you do not need a licence or even need to register it. As long as you have a method for recharging a car battery then you will have all the power you need to send and receive messages.

This in very basic terms is how to operate a Citizens band or CB radio. Citizens band radios provide safety and company on the road, and can be more reliable than cell phones. In order to operate a CB radio you will need a CB radio, familiarity with 10 codes and a pseudonym. You should follow the steps:

Tune into one of the 40 channels. Chanel 19 is the preferred drivers/calling channel used by truckers and channel 9 is the emergency channel. The CB’s range is 5 to 20 miles depending on time weather and location. You may occasionally pick up skip conversations from 100’s or even 1000’s of miles away as I did today

Make sure the mic control is set to maximum listen for a break in the conversation to press the microphone transmission button and say break to let people know you are using the channel. Listen for clearance and begin speaking.

Tip: use the signal meter to gauge reception and distance.

Familiarize yourself with CB jargon including the many 10 codes which are abbreviations used by CB operators i.e 10-4 means affirmative; 10-2 means receiving well; 10-3 means stop transmitting. Create a handle or on air pseudonym i.e. “the wingman”.

Keep your communications brief. Close transmissions by taking your thumb off of the microphone button.

Turn the squelch knob up to cut off the noise from a channel that’s not transmitting. The more you turn it up however the more stations you will lose starting with the most distant.

What's the best solar charger for my needs?

We have a select range of 3 tried and tested (they have been to Everest Base, up Kilimanjaro and across the Atlantic) solar portable chargers. 

Both the MSC Executive and Traveller have a 6000mah grade A battery, giving at least 3 charges of a standard mobile phone, without any solar input. The Executive has a 250ma solar panel (i.e. 10 hours of sun should recover 2500mah of power) and the Traveller has a 150ma solar panel, but dual usb output to charge 2 devices simultaneously. The choice is really in the name and what you will use it for, i.e. Travel are more gentle use!

  If you need a real 'Power Station' for a couple of weeks off grid or to have portable power to charge tablets and laptops, then the Safari mobile solar charger would suit. It has a very large 23000mah battery (14 + phone charges) and an efficient solar panel to recover between 10-20% aday, giving ongoing power, depending on what you are charging. It is the size of a Tablet and will recharge from the mains in only 5 hours.

  In reality most people will charge them up on the mains or USB/PC and view the solar as a very handy addition to these portable power packs. All our mobile chargers come with the most common adapters, but obviously accept your own usb charging lead.

A large misconception about solar energy is that it can only be converted when it is sunny outside. This is actually not the case. Although it is true that it works better when it is bright outside, it only needs direct sunlight to work. Whether it is rain or shine, solar energy can still be sourced as long as it is during the day. THE ultimate Emergency Survival Fishing Kit

I have a great letter to read to you from Mal Vango the General Manager at Survival Supplies UK.

He writes:- A few years of angling when I was younger told me that I’d be lucky to catch anything with most of the fishing kits on the market unless I was very lucky or plopped my hook and line into a particularly rich source of fish.

I have to say Mal that this really is one hell of a kit, it is not only very comprehensive in its contents, it is very well constructed with its eleven individually sealable compartments full of everything that you need to catch fish, but on the box there are very useful hints and tips front and back. Attached to the kit in a 100% water proof pouch is an A4 folded sheet containing Equipment notes, The best places to look for fish, Bait information, Examples of how to tie fishing knots, How to build a Trot Line, How to gut and clean fish, Cooking fish and much more.

For this sort of money I expected a kit with a few of the usual fishing items, you know line, hooks, and weights perhaps a float and not much more.

In fact I was initially totally taken aback with this kits quality and I can clearly see that it was designed with a great deal of thought and effort by someone who wants to provide only the very best products he can.

Mal mentions in his letter that the kit contains equipment you won’t find in other kits well I agree Mal, as I have never seen such a range of artificial baits and lures in any kit let alone one of this size.

But you have cracked it mate with the inclusion of a fishing net, and key ring led, snare wire, light anywhere matches, button compass, light sticks, eye hooks, disgorger, and more, and more, and more very well thought out items.

Although I have not yet fished with this kit I really felt that you should know about it first. I will soon be reviewing the THE ultimate Emergency Survival Fishing Kit and I can’t wait to catch my tea.

Overall I would have to say that this inexpensive entry level tent does what it says on the tin, it will protect you from the elements which is all you can ask for.

But it also offers more I feel, firstly there is the ease with which it is set up literally in seconds, there is plenty of room say for one person and kit or for two but perhaps topping and tailing would be the order of the day.

It is not too heavy and will pack into or onto most backpacks without a problem or could simply be carried by hand in its carry bag.

The Austrian Pup Tent review

This army surplus tent comes packed in two halves, to be issued to separate soldiers in the field and it Includes all tent pegs and poles waterproof neoprene backed nylon material and is an olive green colour.

• The two halves button together to make 1 tent and it was designed for 2 people to share the weight - 'buddy system' each man carries half a tent each - 1 set of poles & half the pegs.
• You then simply button the 2 halves together to make the tent and use the cord loops to peg down and then button the ends to close the doors
• I think it is a great survival item and it is also very cheap. Its size is approx. 66 inch from pole to pole length and 32 inch from the pole to the tapered ends / doors
• This tent does not include a ground sheet, so therefore I would use it as an A-frame shelter or a debris shelter and plan to use vegetation on the ground to prevent ground chill.
• I would also recommend piling soil or sand around the bottom edge of the Pup tent which will help seal the base which will also help trap heat, the soil used will in turn leave a small trench which would drain off any excess rainfall which you could then collect if required.

I have to say that I was impressed with it, although it is a cheap make do type of shelter it does what it says on the tin and that is all I can ask. OK I improved it with the soil and the vegetation base but would you not agree that everyone will improve their shelter if they can? You can always buy a ground sheet for a few quid but then that is even more weight to carry around.

Weighting around 1.4kgs complete it is 5' 10" long 4' 7" wide and 3'6" tall. I do see it as an emergency or survival shelter that would keep you dry and safe if the need arose and when shared between two would be useable for hiking, fishing, mountain climbing, and of course survival and prepping. Combine that with a price of around £20 it is very easy to see the attraction in this low price entry survival system.

When it came to the non-locking pocket knife version of the Boar we decided to offer it exclusively in 14C28N Sandvik Steel as, quite simply, it requires less maintenance.
